MEDIA IMPACT

Digital Heart Health Project

Development and validation of a novel e-health platform for chronic heart failure management.

Project Digital Heart Health aims to explore multiple uses of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) sensor technology to measure blood pressure in the cardiovascular system. The work packages include: development of a novel wireless central venous pressure monitoring system, which provide researchers a new tool to explore clinical applications of safe, simple, on-demand acquisition of this important hemodynamic parameter; advanced e-health for remote management of heart failure which takes first steps towards updating heart failure management to a preemptive, team-based model exploiting digital remote health technology, empowering patients and using a structured workflow to optimize cardiology clinician time and talent; other heart failure e-health topics such as the applications of MEMS in the management of liver cirrhosis and cardio-renal heart failure. The project implements a comprehensive translational (bench-to-bedside) research program and generates multiple novel research and innovation across several disciplines and topics. This work is co-funded by Irish Research Council (IRC) and US Medtech firm Endotronix, USA.

Croí Cróga Project

Using telehealth for remote management of heart-failure during COVID-19.

In this Project, we are using telehealth for remote management of heart failure during COVID-19. Heart failure patients who contract COVID-19 face substantially elevated risk of death or severe debilitation, so it is imperative to protect heart failure patients from exposure to the virus by isolating them at home as much as possible. However, the need for outpatient clinic cardiology assessment directly conflicts with the need to isolate this extremely vulnerable population. This work is co-funded by IRC and Endotronix.

Patient Empowerment Project

Patient empowerment through community-based educational program in Ireland for the prevention and management of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

In this project, we are partnering with Croí-Heart & Stroke Charity, to explore the impact of a structured short-term hypertension educational program on patient knowledge, lifestyle behaviors and blood pressure control in a sample of the Irish population. This project is co-funded by IRC and Medtronic.

CIVIC-P Project

A central venous pressure sensor.

In this project, we are developing a pressure sensor ‘CIVIC-P’ for permanent implant in the vasculature of heart failure patients for the chronic management of the disease. This project is funded by Enterprise Ireland.

Smart RDN Project

Development of smart endovascular renal denervation verification and efficacy device.

In ‘Smart Renal Denervation’ project we are developing the feasibility of a novel device to provide real-time feedback to clinicians to verify the successful operation of Renal denervation to treat high blood pressure not controlled by medication. This project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland.
